San Diego Superior Court employees have voted, 253-12, to be represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees in bargaining and other workplace matters, the union announced Monday.
The vote follows a July, 1989, decision by the California Supreme Court to transfer the authority to hire and fire the San Diego court’s staff from County Clerk Robert Zumwalt to the court’s judges.
Under a specific state law, the clerks lost the civil service benefits they had under Zumwalt in the transfer. Another state law gave the clerks the option of engaging in collective bargaining.
The union represents more than 1.4 million workers nationwide, including 24,000 court employees, it said in a statement.
