Long Beach Approves Police Union Contract
The Long Beach City Council on Tuesday approved a new contract with the police union that ends a year of heated labor negotiations marked by court fights, picketing and emotional condemnations by both sides.
The contract, approved last week by union membership 211-139, amounts to a compromise on several bitterly fought issues. The city won concessions from the 620-member union on the use of one-officer cars at night, five-day workweeks, and release-time for the union president to attend to union business.
The union, for its part, stopped city management from getting everything it wanted on those issues and also obtained significant raises.
