The United States lifted economic sanctions against Namibia today, the same day the African state became independent from South Africa, the Treasury Department announced.

The sanctions had been imposed against South Africa because of its anti-apartheid racial policies and extended to Namibia because it was administered by the South African government.

“In view of Namibia’s independence, and the Department of State’s determination that Namibia will no longer be administered by South Africa, the Treasury Department has amended the regulations to lift sanctions from Namibia,” the department said in a statement.

The sanctions had prohibited loans and new investments and barred imports of certain goods from Namibia.

The sanctions remain against South Africa.
