Countywide : College Trustee’s Records Audited

An Oxnard accounting firm began auditing the records Wednesday of a Ventura Community College District trustee who allegedly has incurred large gambling debts in Nevada.

Ken Merideth, a partner of the firm of Soares, Sandall, Bernacchi & Petrovich, said the firm was notified of its selection by the district Tuesday, and accountants began poring over the expense records of Trustee Tom Ely at the district’s Ventura office Wednesday.

“We’re going to be doing our work and reporting to the board in the next few weeks,” Merideth said. The firm expects to have completed its audit by the district’s next board meeting on April 3, he said.

Merideth said the firm would be looking at “reimbursement-type expense records.” District officials said the audit will examine Ely’s records, including telephone and travel expenses. The Board of Trustees unanimously authorized the audit at a board retreat in Simi Valley last week.

Ely, 54, a board trustee since 1979, is running in the county supervisorial race to represent the 4th District.
