A sharp jump in vehicle burglaries led to an 11.5% increase in crime at Marina del Rey during the first two months of the year, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

By the end of February, 126 serious crimes had been reported in the county-owned marina this year, up from 113 in the first two months of 1989.

The number of vehicle burglaries at the marina shot up 35%, from 62 cases in January and February of last year to 84 in the same period this year. The increase was particularly dramatic in February.

Capt. Ray Sanchez, head of the Marina Sheriff’s Station, told the county’s Small Craft Harbor Commission last week that he had no explanation for the surge in vehicle burglaries.

The number of rape, assault, and burglary cases in the marina was unchanged, while the number of robberies dropped by more than half. Car thefts were also down.
