Lee A. Grissom, president of the Greater San Diego Chamber of Commerce, has taken a two-month leave of absence and has admitted himself to an alcohol-abuse treatment program, chamber officials said Thursday.
The 47-year-old Grissom, who has headed the local chamber since 1975, voluntarily enrolled in the Scripps Memorial McDonald’s Center and is being treated for alcoholism, according to Pete Litrenta, the chamber’s vice president for communications.
Grissom left his chamber post Feb. 27 and is expected back in the office by mid-April. Litrenta said Senior Vice President Max Schetter is serving as acting president.
Pat Crowell, chairman of the chamber’s board of directors, notified the board at a Thursday morning meeting of Grissom’s leave of absence. He added that a statement about the abuse program was released to the press after it was authorized by Grissom himself.
Long active in public affairs, Grissom is a member of the board of trustees of California State University and, in 1987, was selected the alumnus of the year at San Diego State University.
