World IN BRIEF : POLAND : Party Media Empire Dissolved
The Polish Parliament voted to break up the country’s biggest media empire, which for decades served as the Communist Party’s propaganda machine. Deputies in the Sejm (lower house) voted overwhelmingly to dissolve the Workers Publishing Cooperative, 95% owned by the former Communist Party. It was one of Poland’s top five profit-making concerns, contributing heavily to party funds and disseminating the party line in scores of publications across the country. The cooperative owns 44 dailies, 30 weeklies, 86 other periodicals, two news agencies, a news photo agency, three publishing houses and 21 printing shops.
