World IN BRIEF : HAITI : 17 Die, 20 Injured as Violence Builds

Armed men and soldiers shot to death 14 members of previously tolerated civilian defense groups, and angry mobs captured and killed three thugs, radio stations in Port-au-Prince said. The state hospital said that it treated at least 20 people for gunshot and machete wounds. Since Sunday, at least 40 people have been reported killed in nightly shootings that were widely attributed to gangsters and to those still loyal to ousted leaders Lt. Gen. Prosper Avril and Jean-Claude Duvalier.
