Eastern Pilots May OK 25% Pay Cut: The leaders of Eastern Airlines’ pilots union recommended that the membership accept a temporary contract under which wages would be cut by 25%. Health and pension benefits would also be cut. Most of Eastern’s pilots walked off their jobs a year ago this month in sympathy with a strike by the airline’s machinists but abandoned the sympathy strike in November. The interim agreement would apply to the airline’s 1,800 pilots. About half of the pilots have been hired since the strike began; new hires, who are employed at sharply reduced wages, would not have to take the 25% salary cut but would have their benefits reduced.
