County Child-Care Program Possible

The first low-cost regular day-care program for the children of county employees would be created if the Ventura County Board of Supervisors approves the plan Tuesday. Peppermint Junction Children’s Center of Oxnard, which would receive free rental space from the county, would offer full-time day care for 50 children ages 2 through 6 at an average of $67 per week. The program would open before the end of April.

“Peppermint Junction is highly regarded in the community and consistently has a waiting list at their Oxnard site,” Debra Bergevin, county child-care coordinator, wrote in her letter recommending Peppermint Junction to the board.

As an incentive to attract new employees and satisfy existing ones, county supervisors voted Oct. 3 to provide 50 day-care slots to county employees at less than market fees. The county leased a former day-care center at 15 Petit Avenue in Ventura for $4,200 a month for the new program.

A market survey found that there are frequent waiting lists for day care in Ventura County and that average costs run from $70 to $87 per week.

The supervisors were expected to sign a contract with Peppermint Junction for April 2 through December, 1991, with subsequent contracts renewed annually.

The county also operates a day-care program for employees’ children who are mildly ill.
