The Planning Commission on Monday took another step toward approving construction of a 20,000-seat sports arena in the city’s southeast corner.

The five-member commission approved a change in zoning for the corner of Edinger Avenue and Lyon Street that will allow an arena that size to be built in the area.

Proponents of the facility hope to attract professional hockey and basketball as well as stage trade shows and concerts in the proposed indoor arena.

However, before the project can move ahead, the Planning Commission must approve a development agreement with arena developers. That agreement will be considered Thursday by the commission. The City Council is expected to vote on the same document next Monday.

The developer, Orange County Arena Partners, must also receive approval of a building plan from the Planning Commission before construction can begin. One of the developers, Tony Guanci, said specific plans for the $75-million to $80-million project are being drawn up.

“We hope to be open in time for the 1992-93 (professional) basketball season,” Guanci said.
