ROME —
Albania has opened direct telephone service with the West, lifting some of the restrictions that have made it one of the world’s most isolated countries.
An employee of the Albanian Telegraph Agency in Tirana, Albania’s capital, said that direct telephone service to and from Albania began March 20. The operator was reached by direct-dial call from Rome on Monday.
The employee, who did not give his name, said 56 countries have direct-dial links with Albania, including the United States, Canada, Britain and France.
