Ex-Labor Official Guilty in Japan Recruit Scandal
A former Labor Ministry official was convicted on bribery charges Monday in the nation’s most serious financial scandal, the Recruit Co. affair that toppled one prime minister and contributed to the resignation of another last year.
The conviction of Shigeru Kano was the first stemming from the scandal, which came to light in mid-1988 and involved payoffs in the form of cheap stock, contributions and entertainment to top politicians of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party as well as prominent business leaders.
Kano, 56, received a one-year suspended sentence and was fined $8,300. He was put on probation for three years.
