CHECK ONE: As Latinos complained about census hot lines (A1), blacks voiced their own concerns. . . . Ministers like the Rev. G. Mansfield Collins, of Santa Ana’s Johnson Chapel AME Church, told congregants to check the box marked “Black or Negro” on their census forms. . . . Writing “African-American” in the “other” category confuses the computer, which does not include respondents in the initial minority count. . . . “A person can run the risk of not being counted,” conceded a census spokesman, adding that “this was not intended as a slight.”
