WORLD IN BRIEF : POLAND : Warsaw Set to Help Soviet Jews Emigrate

Poland offered to help Soviet Jews emigrate to Israel after Hungary’s state-owned airline announced that it was stopping charter flights for Soviet Jews because of an Arab guerrilla threat. Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki pledged Polish help in a speech to the American Jewish Congress in New York. “As in the Middle Ages,” he said, “Poland gave refuge to Jews fleeing persecution, so today Poland will not evade humanitarian assistance to Jews emigrating from the Soviet Union.”
