Although the county has taken temporary steps to prevent inmates from escaping from the Chula Vista Jail, deputy county administrative officer Bob Griego recommended Tuesday that the county spend $251,000 more on long-term improvements to make the jail more secure.

Crews have already created a “prototype” device to install on day-room windows that 14 inmates used to escape March 7.

The long-term improvements, outlined in a report to county supervisors Tuesday would include a new security fence, electronic security devices, alarms and cameras.

The county is reviewing “security risks” at other facilities, but “the most immediate security improvements are for the South Bay Detention Facility,” Griego said.
