OXNARD : Recycling Measures to Be Introduced

Share

Facing a state order to cut municipal waste by 50% by the year 2000, Oxnard will soon introduce programs to recycle newspapers and residential yard waste.

The City Council voted Tuesday to collect bundled or bagged newspapers outside 2,000 houses. The newspapers will be periodically picked up by a Los Angeles newspaper recycler in a program expected to save the city $30 per ton in dumping fees.

The city also will begin collecting yard waste, such as leaves and grass clippings, from special containers in selected neighborhoods. The yard waste would be held at a site off Ventura Road to decompose, then used as mulch or ground cover for city landscaping.

In addition, the city will set out recycling bins on the 40 neighborhood cleanup days it holds each year at which residents can dispose of various types of refuse.

The city already recycles restaurant glasses, telephone books and Christmas trees.
