From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The National Transportation Safety Board said that utilities should install excess flow valves on some residential gas lines to help prevent explosions and fires from natural-gas leaks. The board recommended that the Department of Transportation require use of the safety devices and also said that suppliers should give customers the opportunity to buy the equipment. The valves restrict the flow of gas in case of a surge from a leak or rupture in the line.
