PARIS — France and Sweden, alarmed by the increasing health toll of cigarette smoking, are planning sweeping anti-smoking measures, including hefty tax increases and bans on advertising.
The French government said Tuesday it plans to raise cigarette prices 15% and progressively ban advertisements and sponsorship. The Cabinet is set to adopt the anti-smoking plan today. It will be put to Parliament next spring.
Sweden is also considering drastic steps to cut cigarette sales including increased taxes, a ban on smoking in public places and prohibition of advertising.
