CONSUMERS : A Four-Times Faster Toothbrush

Share

The new Brushrite Automatic Toothbrush may look like a “Star Trek” prop. But it’s “significantly better” than manual brushes in removing tooth plaque, say independent dentists’ studies and University of Nebraska researchers.

The automatic toothbrush, developed by Omaha dentist Philip Rich, cleans the upper and lower teeth and inside and outside surfaces simultaneously with four, circular, oscillating brushes. It has 68 tufts of soft bristles that clean teeth and massage gums in less time than it takes to brush properly with a manual toothbrush.

“You get four brushes working at once,” said Rich, “So the amount of time you need to do a good job brushing is cut to one-fourth. It is something like running your car through an automated car wash.”

Rich explained that the brush is designed so the bristles follow an arc-stroke that matches the curve where the gum meets the tooth, automatically cleaning plaque and massaging the gums.

The electric brush, which comes with two brush heads, is cordless and has a rechargeable power base that can be plugged into any 120-volt outlet. Once charged, Rich said Brushrite is good for 10 days for one person before it has to be recharged.

Brushrite is available from B & L Enterprises, 4355 Sepulveda Blvd., Suite 215, Sherman Oaks, Calif. 91403; phone, (818) 789-4946. It costs $39.95 plus $2 shipping and handling. Californians add 6.75% sales tax.
