Council Panel Rejects Incinerator Plan

A Los Angeles City Council committee has voted to oppose a plan to build an incinerator at a Glendale landfill, but a Glendale official said no such project is being pursued.

The measure adopted by the council’s Environmental and Waste Quality Committee cited a proposal to generate electricity by burning waste at Glendale’s Scholl Canyon Landfill. The motion, approved unanimously, said Los Angeles will oppose such an incinerator until it undergoes a complete environmental review and all potential health risks are resolved.

The motion was introduced by Councilman Richard Alatorre, who represents the Eagle Rock community near the landfill.

Regarding a Scholl Canyon incinerator, George Miller, Glendale’s public works director, said, “There’s nothing in the books or on the drawing board at this time.”

Miller and Glendale Councilman Carl Raggio toured an incinerator plant in City of Commerce last summer and discussed the possibility of building such a project at Scholl Canyon. But Miller said he has received no instructions from the council as a whole, and the project is not being pursued.

The motion opposing the incinerator will be considered by the full Los Angeles City Council in several weeks, said Adrienne Bass, a city clerk’s staff member.
