St. Anne’s Begins Expansion

St. Anne’s Maternity Home, recipient of a $1.5-million grant from the Fritz B. Burns Foundation, has broken ground for campus expansion at 155 N. Occidental Blvd. to include a 96-bed residential center for teens, a chapel and public facilities. St. Anne’s has received $600,000 to date, with the rest to be paid over the next three years. Opened in 1908, the home serves more than 500 teen-agers and their infants each year and will aid senior citizens when the new facility is completed.

Community Counseling Service held “Pedigree Celebrity Pets Capades” March 11 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, netting $110,000. Proceeds will go toward the development of a residential program for emotionally disturbed adolescent girls. Suzanne Pleshette was honorary event chair. Nancy Powell is counseling service president and chaired the event.

Hathaway Children’s Services received a $2,000 donation in early March from the Los Angeles Turf Club Foundation. The money will be used to purchase a microfilm system to store Hathaway patient records. Hathaway’s programs are designed to meet the needs of severely emotionally disturbed, abused and neglected children and their families.

Soroptimist International of Los Angeles held its Voguestyle Fashion Event March 11 at Robinson’s Beverly Hills. The event, attended by 340 guests, raised $15,000 for Soroptimist Foundation, which provides support for educational, scientific, literary and charitable causes, including the Downtown Women’s Center, Soroptimist House, day care, scholarships and youth forums.

St. Joseph’s Medical Center honored SHARE (Share Happily and Reap Endlessly) at an awards dinner to commend community agencies for their participation in the center’s Renews Life Program for Alcohol and Substance Abuse. SHARE donated $15,000 to the Adolescent Substance Abuse program. President Joan Kardashian accepted the award.

Chrysalis Homeless Assistance Organization received a grant of $185,000 from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation to expand operations to provide employment services for Los Angeles’ homeless population. Funds are payable over a two-year period, enabling Chrysalis to expand its offices and increase services.
