Doubles Team Keys UCSD Victory

UC San Diego’s Tim Ditzler and Jeff Beathard, playing No. 3 doubles, lost the first three points of the deciding tiebreaker, then won the next seven points as the Tritons defeated UC Santa Cruz, 5-4 in a nonconference men’s tennis match Friday in Honolulu.

UCSD trailed 4-2 after singles, until victories by the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams--Chris Belloli-Sig Huber and Francios Monnar-Steve Stukovsky--pulled the Tritons to 4-4. Ditzler and Beathard defeated Greg Jarasitis and John Roeding, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in the deciding match.

Santa Cruz is the defending NCAA Division III champion and top-ranked Division III team in the nation. Fifth-ranked UCSD improved to 9-7. Santa Cruz dropped to 12-2.

Fourth-seeded Alabama clinched the decisive No. 3 doubles match to take a 5-4 victory against the University of San Diego in the second round of the Blue-Gray National Collegiate Championships in Montgomery, Ala. Michael Sass and Matt McKelvain defeated USD’s Chris Toomey and Tim Bubnack, 3-6, 7-6 (10-8), 6-3, in the deciding match.

Fifteenth-ranked John Stipson upset fifth-ranked Jose Luis Noriega of USD, 6-4, 6-3, in No. 1 singles to pace thirteenth-ranked Alabama (13-7). J.R. Edwards and Thomas Simonsen picked up victories in singles for the Toreros (17-4).

USD plays Cal today in a consolation match. The Toreros lost to the Golden Bears, 5-3, on Feb. 4.

San Diego State’s only victory came from Woody Yocom in the No. 3 singles position, as seventh-ranked Harvard defeated the Aztecs, 5-1, at SDSU. Yocom defeated Mark Leschly, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. SDSU fell to 15-6.

SOFTBALL

San Diego State split a double header with visiting Nebraska winning the first game, 3-0, and losing the nightcap, 2-0.

Michelle Wesson (9-8), who pitched the first game for SDSU (10-19), has pitched 42 1/3 consecutive shutout innings. She struck out two and allowed four hits and one walk.

SDSU’s Stephanie Chapel went two for three with one run and two RBIs in the first game.

In the second game, Nebraska scored both runs on an SDSU center-field error.

The Aztecs will be hosts to No. 11 San Jose State at 1:30 today in a double header.

Shannon Riley went six for eight for the day as U.S. International University swept a double header from Santa Clara, 4-0 and 8-1.

Riley was four for four in the second game with a double, three triples and three runs-batted in. She had two RBIs in the first game.

Nora Flores shut out Santa Clara and scattered six hits in the first game. Cindy Oliver allowed just one run and three hits in the second game for USIU (19-19).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Nicole Storto and Susan Hawke managed the only victory as SDSU fell to No. 1 Stanford, 8-1, in a nonconference match at SDSU. Storto and Hawke won at No. 3 doubles. They defeated Kylie Johnson and Marla Carruth, 6-3, 6-4. Stanford stayed perfect at 18-0. The 18th-ranked Aztecs dropped to 10-9.

WOMEN’S GOLF

USIU’s Kim Milles dropped to ninth after the final round of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Kaneohi, Hawaii. Milles shot a eight-over-par 80 and finished with a 231. Debbie Parks of Arizona was first with a 220.

Bonita’s Christy Erb (75-76-75--226) and Elizabeth Bowman (76-74-76--226), both playing for UCLA, finished in a three-way tie for third. Arizona won the tournament. USIU was fifth.
