An overnight crackdown on prostitution in the Midway District resulted in the arrests or detentions of 57 persons, the San Diego Police Department reported.

The operation centered around Sports Arena Boulevard, Midway Drive and Rosecrans Street and was prompted by complaints of residents in the area, said police spokesman Bill Robinson.

Among those complaining, he said, were officials at a nearby private school who reported finding discarded prophylactics on school grounds.

With the use of undercover police officers and female decoys, the operation netted 13 suspected prostitutes, two of whom were arrested and 11 who were detained and released. In addition, 44 men were arrested for soliciting prostitution, including two men who were also arrested on suspicion of possession of drugs, Robinson said.

The police activity started at 9:30 p.m. Saturday and continued until 4:30 a.m. Sunday, Robinson said.
