YACHTING : Drumbeat Wins at Long Beach

Drumbeat, skippered by Don Ayres Jr., took advantage of a collision involving two other boats to win the American Cancer Society Invitational yacht race off Long Beach Sunday.

Drumbeat, which was forced to circle back at the start after crossing the starting line early, pulled to the lead when Hokulele, skippered by Peter Isler, and Evolution, Bob Doughty, collided rounding the last mark.

Drumbeat was timed in 2 hours 29 minutes.

Hokulele was second in 2:30, followed by Evolution in 2:31; Pyewacket, Roy Disney, 2:32; Kathmandu, 2:34, and Grand Illusion.

Grand Illusion was disqualified for crossing the starting line early and not restarting.

The event raised an estimated $30,000 for cancer research.
