SHORT TAKES : Van Gogh Recovered; 3 Arrested
A painting by Vincent Van Gogh missing since last month was recovered when three men tried to pick up $1.3 million in ransom and were arrested, police said today.
The canvas, “Wheatfield With Sheaves,” was recovered undamaged after the arrests Friday, a police spokesman said.
The painting disappeared from a warehouse of a moving company March 12. An insurance company received a letter demanding the ransom 11 days later.
The company alerted police who arrested three Italian men near Zurich when they showed up to collect the ransom.
The work is valued at $1.6 million. Police said one of the suspects was employed by the moving company that had kept the painting pending its sale.
