LONDON — Peter Jones, a senior sports announcer for British Broadcasting Corp.’s radio services, died Monday after collapsing as he called the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race. He was 60.
The cause of death was not revealed. Newspaper reports said Jones suffered a stroke while covering the rowing race on the Thames on Saturday afternoon. He was taken to St. George’s Hospital in south London after the race but did not regain consciousness, a hospital spokesman said.
Jones was a featured correspondent on Sports Report, the BBC sports roundup show. His work included commentary on the Heysel Stadium riots in 1985, in which 35 people died, and the disaster at Hillsborough Stadium last April, in which 95 soccer fans were crushed to death.
