Cuba warned that it will sell its sugar and nickel on the international market if the Soviet Union and other traditional East European trading partners stop buying them.

“If there are difficulties, we will go out into the world market and sell sugar and nickel,” Juan Escalona, president of Cuba’s National Assembly, told a news conference.

The bulk of Cuba’s sugar and nickel exports have traditionally gone to East European and other socialist countries.

Escalona predicted that Cuba’s economic relations with its traditional trading partners in Eastern Europe will not continue at the same overall level as before because of the political and economic reforms sweeping those countries.
