NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Smog Levels Rose in ’88 Heat, EPA Says

Some 112 million Americans were exposed to excessive smog in the scorching summer of 1988, when record high temperatures drove up pollution levels by 8% from 1987, the federal Environmental Protection Agency said. Agency officials said, however, that preliminary monitoring information shows that smog decreased nationwide in 1989, again, because of weather factors. Cooler, damper conditions are less conducive to the formation of ozone, the primary component of smog.
