County Refused New Trial in Suit by Physicist
A judge denied the county’s bid Friday for a new trial in the case of a physicist who won a $750,000 jury award after he was fired for reporting faulty lab equipment at a county hospital.
However, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Aurelio Munoz refused to order the county to reinstate physicist Reuven Zach, though the judge indicated he would do so if the judgment is reduced through the county’s appeal.
Zach, formerly a medical radiation physicist at Olive View Medical Center in Sylmar, sued the county, alleging he was laid off from his job on Oct. 14, 1988, in retaliation for exposing faulty X-ray equipment and film at Olive View and its satellite facilities.
