NATION IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Charges of Abuse at Alien Holding Center
Authorities in Miami are investigating complaints that guards at a federal holding center for illegal aliens are physically and psychologically abusing inmates, most of whom are Haitians. Rep. Dante B. Fascell (D-Fla.) and a panel of Dade County officials said they have received complaints that guards at the Krome Detention Center have beaten inmates, locked them in portable bathrooms and forced them to kneel and raise their hands while being ridiculed. Fascell said he asked Atty. Gen. Dick Thornburgh to investigate.
