World IN BRIEF : YUGOSLAVIA : Opposition Takes Lead in Slovenia
The opposition coalition DEMOS took a big lead in early, unofficial results in elections to the regional Parliament in the republic of Slovenia. The Democratic United Opposition of Slovenia had almost 50% of the votes, with the ruling ex-Communist party trailing in second place with about 21%. The voting in Slovenia, Yugoslavia’s most Westernized republic, were the first multi-party elections in the federation of eight republics and provinces since World War II. Milan Kucan, candidate for the ex-Communist party, which renamed itself the Democratic Reform Party, was ahead in the four-man contest for the largely ceremonial post of president.
