Baseball ’90 PREVIEW : ANGELS ON TV AND RADIO

TV ANNOUNCERS

* Joe Torre: Torre, a former manager with the Mets and Braves, will start his sixth year broadcasting Angel games, his first as the TV play-by-play announcer on Channel 5. He will also be an analyst on SportsChannel. Torre replaces his former partner, Bob Starr, who had been the team’s play-by-play announcer for the past 10 seasons. Torre also worked as an analyst with ESPN during the 1989 National League playoffs and World Series. He played catcher, first and third base during his 18-season playing career. His best year was with the Cardinals in 1971, when he won the batting title (.363) and was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player.

* Reggie Jackson: Jackson will begin his first season for KTLA as an analyst. During his 21 seasons in the major leagues, Jackson, an outfielder, has played for the Kansas City and Oakland A’s, the Orioles, Yankees and Angels. He hit .262 and ranks sixth all-time in career home runs with 563. He has appeared in 12 All-Star games, 11 championship series and five World Series.

RADIO ANNOUNCERS

* Allan Conin: Conin, the Angels’ play-by-play announcer, will enter his seventh season in the KMPC broadcast booth. He started his career in 1979 in Honolulu doing play-by-play for the Hawaii Islanders.

* Ken Brett: Brett will start his fourth season with KMPC as an analyst. He pitched two seasons with the Angels (1977-78) and nine years with nine other clubs (Red Sox, Brewers, Phillies, Pirates, Yankees, White Sox, Twins, Dodgers and Royals). He played with brother, George, with the Royals.

SPANISH RADIO ANNOUNCERS

* Ulpiano Cos Villa: Villa will begin his ninth season as play-by-play announcer for the Angels’ Spanish radio network. He worked the CBS Spanish radio network broadcast of the the American League Championship Series in 1982. He also worked the National League Championship series in 1984-88 and the World Series in 1984 for the same network. He also has broadcast All-Star games in 1984, ‘85, ’87 and ’88. Villa lives in Los Angeles.

* Ruben Valentine: A broadcaster for 21 years, Valentine will open his fifth season as a color analyst for the Angels’ Spanish radio broadcasts. He attended the University of Puerto Rico and was signed to a minor league contract by the Pirates. Valentine resides in Silver Lake.
