The Simi Valley City Council approved a contract Monday with a private hazardous waste hauler to provide services for the city’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day.

On a 5-0 vote, the council approved an agreement with GSX Services of Greenbrier, Tenn., to collect and transport for disposal the household wastes collected during the May 12 event. GSX operated the city’s first such collection program in 1988.

The council, acting as directors of the Simi Valley Sanitation District, also agreed to appropriate an additional $50,000 to fund this year’s program, bringing the total cost to $160,000. The additional money will be used to cover increased disposal costs, city officials said.
