NEWPORT BEACH : City Dumps Rule on Trash Compactors

Share

Ten years ago, the City Council decided to require all new homes to have trash compactors. This week, citing environmental concerns, the council removed that requirement from the municipal code.

The city considers trash compactors to be counterproductive because they can discourage recycling, said Raimar Schuller, Newport Beach building director. In 1980, officials believed trash compactors were a good way to reduce the buildup at landfills.

“Today, however, they have truck-mounted trash compactors,” Schuller said. “The technology on the equipment, the trucks and such, has been so much improved” that home-compacted trash no longer aids pickup and disposal.
