The Hawthorne City Council voted 5 to 0 Tuesday to adopt an amendment to the General Plan that will permit more commercial than industrial development in the city.

The amendment, first proposed in August, will allow commercial development in 10 areas that were previously slated for industrial or residential uses, Planning Director Michael Goodson said. High-density residential development will be permitted in four other areas.

Many of the properties are vacant lots located on or near Rosecrans Avenue, between Prairie Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard. An environmental impact report on the areas was adopted last May.
