The Debate Over Homosexuality and Its ‘Treatment’ Rages On

Regarding Susan Christian’s well-balanced article on “reparative” therapy:

Most psychologists don’t classify sexual orientation as 100%-0%. Most of us fall somewhere along a continuum with varying degrees of the “other orientation” as part of our makeup, with bisexuals more or less in the middle. Those gays who are successfully “cured” are probably not very far from being straight.

Sadly, there are also “cured” gays who are successful merely in suppressing an essential part of their personality.

However, the experts quoted by Christian missed the real reason that most homosexuals seek to be “cured”--they are themselves homophobic. It is not their own value system that drives them but the warped values they have absorbed from our culture. They have internalized the hatred of gays, which is so ingrained in our society.

As a Christian who believes that God made and loves people all across the continuum of sexual orientations, and who believes the “reparative therapy” movement has done deep harm, I too join Gary and Michael in praying, “forgive them for they know not what they do.” Larkette Lein Irvine
