ORANGE : Senior Housing Link to Structure Rejected

Share

The City Council has rejected a plan to include several units of senior housing as part of a proposed parking structure in the historic district of Old Towne.

By a 4-0 vote, with Mayor Don E. Smith abstaining, the City Council accepted the Old Towne Parking Committee’s argument that the municipal parking lot planned for the 100 block of South Orange Street is too small to accommodate 7 1/2 units of senior housing.

The new three-level structure, added to an existing 88-space lot, will provide at least 200 new parking stalls. Including the housing units would require adding a fourth level to the building, making it too tall to comply with Old Towne’s 35-foot height restriction, said city Traffic Engineer Bernie Dennis.

Dennis said the original plan called for only a parking structure.
