Pennsylvania’s honorary Highway Safety Month chairman is a man who routinely drives faster than 200 m.p.h. and has been in more than 100 car crashes.

But when champion race car driver Richard Petty leaves the race track, he said, he obeys speed limits and drives smart.

The seven-time Daytona 500 winner came to the Capitol on Thursday to endorse Pennsylvania’s new highway safety campaign.

“There’s nobody in the world who has wrecked more cars then me,” Petty said. He added that he has “always been interested in the safety deal” and noted that he has six grandchildren to think about when speeding around the race track.
