U.S. Papal Nuncio Gets Vatican Post
Archbishop Pio Laghi, who has been the Pope’s personal representative in the United States since 1980, will return to Rome in early May to head the Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education.
“I am pleased for Archbishop Laghi but sad for ourselves,” said Archbishop Daniel E. Pilarczyk of Cincinnati, president of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Laghi had a reputation as a skilled diplomat when he was named to succeed Archbishop Jean Jadot in the dual posts of apostolic delegate to the United States (which was upgraded to a formal diplomatic post in 1984) and permanent observer to the Organization of American States.
In his new position as head of the Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education, the 67-year-old Archbishop Laghi will succeed Cardinal William Baum, an American who in turn has been named to head the Apostolic Penitentiary, the Vatican office that deals with matters of conscience involving the sacraments.
