About 100,000 American high school students will soon be receiving thank you letters from West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl.

“Dear young friend,” the letter begins--in English--and goes on in German to thank the students for writing to Kohl to express an interest in Germany and the German language.

Kohl’s office said Friday that letters bearing the chancellor’s signature would be going out to an estimated 100,000 12- to 16-year-olds in the United States who took part in a project arranged by the American Assn. of Teachers of German.

“With your wish for contact and your interest in the German language, you have already taken the most important step toward understanding another people,” Kohl wrote.
