Malibu Diaper Service Needs Rethinking

Share

No diaper service in Malibu? What’s an environmentalist to do? Wait around six months using disposables while crying crocodile tears over the environmental problem they cause (“A Baby Step for Ecology,” April 5).

Perhaps Lori Lerner Gray and her Malibu moms might have considered another option: buying their own cloth diapers. Services are great, but (they) necessarily use larger amounts of water (at least 12 times as much) and energy than one does at home.

Several months ago, I dropped my service and began doing my own cloth diapers. It’s simply not that terrible a chore, although it did require some changes in my pristine thinking. I do only 2.5 extra loads of laundry a week, and more than make up for it with toilet dams and water-saving shower heads.
