P.M. BRIEFING : Stock Prices Plunge in Tokyo

Stock prices on the Tokyo Stock Exchange plummeted today in extremely light trading, reflecting investors’ worries over the yen’s weakness on foreign exchange markets and bond prices.

The blue-chip Nikkei Average of 225 selected issues, which fell 409.28 points Friday, plunged 750.74 points, or 2.57 percent, to 28,463.18.

The broader-based Tokyo Stock Exchange Index of all listed major shares lost 36.12 points to 2,129.77.

An estimated 230 million shares changed hands, compared with 330 million shares Friday.

Declines outpaced advances 871 to 110, with 98 issues unchanged.

Analysts said most large institutional investors stayed on the sidelines ahead of Wednesday’s announcement on U.S. trade statistics for February.
