Alcohol consumption in Japan increased 3.7% in 1989 from a year earlier to a record 2.3 billion gallons, the National Tax Agency said today.

The agency attributed the rise mainly to increased beer consumption spurred by the introduction of many new brands. Beer consumption accounted for 70% of total alcohol consumption by Japan in 1989.
