WESTMINSTER : Foes of Fireworks Ban Mount Drive

A residents’ group on Monday announced a campaign to defeat a measure on the June 5 ballot that would ban fireworks in the city.

The group, called Westminster Citizens for Safety, said the ban would mean a loss of more than $100,000 a year for community and youth organizations.

“There are 29 organizations that sell fireworks each year, and they each make $4,000 to $10,000 during the four days that they sell fireworks. You just can’t make that much money selling candy bars,” said Cathy Zoellner, committee chairwoman.

Zoellner and her committee collected sufficient signatures to place the measure on the ballot after the City Council voted in September to ban fireworks.

“I’m very confident,” Zoellner said. “We have a very strong cause. There is no reason to ban fireworks. I feel people are very tired of ‘big brother’ looking over their shoulder. We’re adults and feel we should be treated like adults.”

But whether or not the measure passes, there will be fireworks this July. In December, the council voted to enact the fireworks ban in August, if it succeeds at the polls.
