City Begins Annexation of Bolsa Chica
Voting unanimously, the City Council on Monday night launched a move that will ultimately annex the 1,635-acre Bolsa Chica area to the city.
The council adopted a schedule of environmental hearings and other procedures that must be conducted before annexation can occur by 1991.
The council’s action concludes about 20 years of debate within the city on whether to annex Bolsa Chica. The area is the largest wetlands in Southern California and has been a battleground between developers and environmentalist for most of the last two decades.
Orange County Supervisor Harriett M. Wieder appeared before the council to urge the annexation.
“This would really be a giant step towards something we’ve been trying to resolve for many years,” Wieder said.
Wieder, a former mayor of Huntington Beach, noted that the city had long struggled over what to do with Bolsa Chica.
