NATION IN BRIEF : OKLAHOMA : Stalled School Bill Stirs Teacher Strike

Schools were unable to open in 145 of the state’s 606 districts as thousands of teachers went on strike to protest the Legislature’s failure to pass a $230-million school improvement package that would raise faculty salaries. Hundreds of teachers lobbied for the stalled measure and picketed the state Capitol in Oklahoma City, joining a crowd of demonstrators estimated at 10,000. “If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you can’t, thank a legislator,” read one sign.
