More than two-thirds of the census forms mailed three weeks ago to Ventura County residents have been returned, putting the county in second place statewide in terms of the percentage of forms returned, officials said Tuesday.

Larry Bryant, a Census Bureau spokesman, said that as of last week--the latest period for which statewide figures are available--66% of the 228,219 questionnaires mailed in Ventura County had been returned.

Concord County in Northern California was leading the state with a return rate of 67% of the 279,061 forms mailed there, Bryant said.

Geary-Ellen Williams, manager of the Ventura County Census Bureau office, said residents continue to flood the office with the forms. By Monday, 68.7% had been returned.

Since the census forms were mailed out in California on March 23, only 57% of the 10,788,677 forms had been returned by last Friday.

Los Angeles County had a return rate of 57%.
