Gay-Bashing a Problem

Share

I was amazed and appalled by quotes from police officers of the Northeast Division in your article on gay-bashing in Silver Lake (April 5).

For someone to say that gay-bashing is not a problem in the area is to deny reality. For the division commander to say he was arranging extra patrols to deal with gay men “committing sex acts” as much as for the hoodlums who have attacked gays and straights alike is irresponsible.

As part of a Neighborhood Watch group, I have talked with community groups and neighbors. I know that most of us would be afraid to walk five blocks on Sunset at night. I also doubt that the police would investigate or harass the young heterosexual couples who park on our streets for their romantic trysts.

The police should place their priorities on safeguarding all citizens from street violence.
