The director of UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography has been appointed to a new federal board whose members will advise the U. S. secretary of energy on the development of a national energy strategy.

Edward A. Frieman will join a 28-member board of representatives of academia and the public and private sectors. Eight members of the board are from California, including its chairman, California Institute of Technology President Thomas E. Everhart.

Frieman has been director of Scripps since 1986. He said he hopes to provide the new Secretary of Energy Advisory Board with “special insights into the important role of the oceans in our forecasts for climate and pollution.”
